Srilanka – Cricket World Cup 2019

Srilanka is anything but in contention for a top 4 spot in this World Cup, and their squad doesn’t paint a happy picture, at least not on paper. Not being a critic here but just giving my honest analysis.

Mihir’s SWOT Analysis
CWC 2019 Srilanka Mihir SWOT
  1. This particular strength of Srilanka is derived from what they don’t posses – The team is not burdened by expectations.
  2. An array of all-rounders can allow their batting to run deep.
  1. Uncertainty in the composition of Playing XI wouldn’t help the mindsets of players.
  2. When it comes to ODIs, bowlers lack a certain aura which one experiences with other limited-overs bowlers.
  3. A lot of results in limited overs games haven’t gone their way.
  1. They have an opportunity to carry no baggage from the past and look forward to a hopeful future and work towards that goal.
  2. An opportunity for them to be realists instead of hopeless optimists but at the same time act proactively.
  1. When it comes to a phase of transition, it is important for players to receive an extended run despite a few failures. Now, that might be difficult to enforce in a World Cup but it is upto the conviction of the captain and management about a certain individual.
  2. No burden of expectations can lead to complacency which could be poisonous.
key player
Kusal Perera –> His explosiveness at the top of the order, or the absence of it could very well be the difference between where Srilanka and up at versus where they could end up at. If he gets cracking, it could allow players like Dimuth Karunaratne, Lahiru Thirimanne and Angelo Mathews to get their eye in. Therefore, Kusal Perera plays a very important role in the fortunes of Srilanka.
I wouldn’t be alone in saying that the chances of Srilanka making it to the semi-finals are very slim. Having said that, it is a perfect opportunity for them to rebuild for the ICC World ODI Championship.
