Indian Premier League 2021

The IPL is designed to NOT have calm waters for too long – there is a mega auction that happens after every 3 seasons, with one to happen before the 2022 season. And the fact that IPL is the only domestic T20 league ever to have been shifted out of its home country puts in perspective the organising ability of IPL. As like each year since 2017, Cricket in Progress! has come up with a SWOT analysis for each of the 8 teams. We have introduced some new elements to it which introduces an element of ‘fantasy’ to factual analysis while deriving our observations and analysis from alternative indicators as well. We are excited to present those to you.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) – IPL 2021

Chennai Super Kings had a relatively quiet and predictable auction in which they looked to fill their ‘perceived’ gaps in the all-rounder department and add a batsman or two. There’s nothing characteristically different in this CSK squad. They have once again put their weight behind experience – in terms of age and in terms of number of IPL matches played. It’s that time of the year but it is not really ‘that’ time of the year. Preparations for the T20 World Cup would have been in full swing right now. Instead we have players converging in UAE almost a month before the start of another IPL season. These are crazy times.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) – IPL 2019

CSK not only enter this edition of the IPL as the defending champions but they also come with 24 players from the last edition. No prizes in guessing that such a roster is led by the one and only Mahendra Singh Dhoni. With their only addition at this year’s auction being uncapped batsman Ruturaj Gaikwad, we shouldn’t expect much changes to the playing XI from last year. The playing XI will only be strengthened with the availability of Mitchell Santner and Kedar Jadhav, both of whom were injured last year.

Am I the only one or does it feel like this year’s IPL is lacking a certain level of enthusiasm that we have become accustomed to over the years? If you think so too, much of the blame can be accredited to the fact that this is the first time in its 12-year history that the IPL, the ICC Cricket World Cup and India’s General Elections are occurring in the same year.
