Delhi Capitals (DC) – IPL 2020

Delhi Capitals (DC) – IPL 2020

4 min read
Introduction

The squad of Delhi Capitals looks one of the most complete squads on paper, this IPL. Filled with batsmen, who can play the explosive role, the anchor role and the pinch-hitting role. Then there are the all-rounders who are right up there in terms of performance. They have quality spinners and fast bowlers. If that wasn’t enough, every department has suitable backups. Had Chris Woakes been available to play, this team would have been even stronger, but I expect (hope) Marcus Stoinis to do a great job as well.

strengths
  1. They posses a squad which possess extreme balance in all departments and with plenty of bench strength to add to that.
  2. The balance between experience and youth is an interesting prospect for this franchise going ahead, at least until the next mega auction.
  3. Varied spinners – in Axar Patel, Ravichandran Ashwin, Amit Mishra and Sandeep Lamichhane, DC have a variety of spinners which no other teams have. And this could turn out to be just the x-factor to take them all the way.
weaknesses
  1. While the loss of Chris Woakes opens up a highway for Marcus Stoinis, I am afraid Delhi can’t afford to play him at the top of the order. At lower down the order, we have never seen the best version of Stoinis. This is a weakness for the Delhi team because if they then decide not to play Stoinis at all, it could be huge loss for them.
opportunities
  1. With a near-perfect balanced squad, Delhi Capitals have a great opportunity to give us all a first-time IPL winner, the first time it will happen since 2016 when SRH won the IPL.
  2. The batting as well as the bowling lineup is well-suited for the slow-ish and possibly deteriorating pitches on offer in the UAE, DC have another opportunity here to go a step further than the playoffs.
threats
  1. If anything, Delhi Capitals have a problem of “too many” – there are far too many top-order batsman, far too many leaders and very few spots to fill.
  2. There is a lure of playing Axar Patel as he carries a label of an “all-rounder”, which I am afraid could hamper the balance of their playing XI. Instead they’d be better off giving a full-time opportunity to Harshal Patel who would be a better bet even if the pitches are slow.
player from another team
Mohammad Nabi —> The 4 foreigners slots for SRH could easily be David Warner/Jonny Bairstow/Kane Williamson/Rashid Khan, which would mean there won’t always be a place for Nabi in the playing XI. But, here at DC, Nabi would slot in like skates on ice, in the middle-order, providing match finishing abilities as well roll his arm in case some other spinner is having an off day.
key player
Kagiso Rabada —> If Rabada is able to shake off the rustiness that he would have, he would be playing a very important role in the progress of this Delhi team. He is the teams lead bowler and much of death-bowling responsibilities will fall on him. He doesn’t only have to be economical but would also need to take wickets more often than not. He would also be providing, albeit unwittingly, a much needed Ricky Ponting-like aggression to a team of Rahanes, Iyers and Amit Mishras.
prediction
A playoff finish is almost certain for Delhi Capitals and for me, they are the favourites to win the tournament. There’s no doubt in my mind that Shreyas Iyer will be able to integrate all these individuals to the extent of creating a championship winning team.
