Introduction

KL Rahul is appointed the full-time captain of this franchisee and they have got Glenn Maxwell in their team again. Kings XI Punjab have definitely set yes on the long run based on the roster that they have compiled. span class=”tooltip-style”>Baring some negligible gaps, their team looks strong on paper.

strengths
  1. The top-order is heavily loaded and should give the team great starts more often than not, which would be the perfect platform for Glenn Maxwell to launch at the backend of the innings.
  2. Having Mohammad Shami and Chris Jordan sorts out their death bowling, which in T20 is of the utmost important. Not every team has the luxury of considering their death bowling sorted.
weaknesses
  1. There’s a lack of support for Maxwell in the middle and lower-middle order, putting that much more pressure on him.
  2. Bowling is a tad-bit weaker in terms of experienced and could be found wanting at certain crunch moments. Moreover the lack of variety could hamper their chances at times.
opportunities
There are plenty of opportunities for individuals as well as the team.

  1. The lesser known seamers could provide a good support act to Mohammad Shami and make their names.
  2. Mayank Agarwal has the perfect opportunity to have a breakthrough season – he has made this publicly known as well.
  3. Nicholas Pooran, if given first preference over contemporaries, has a great opportunity to become an IPL regular as well as increase the value of his stock in IPL marker for the years to come.
  4. The team itself has a good opportunity to clinch their 1st IPL title, but it remains to be seen if they have the X-factor to do so.
threats
  1. Overplaying Chris Gayle or underplaying Nicholas Pooran (somehow, I have a feeling these 2 are going to be co-related) would be the biggest threat for this team, maybe not immediately, but definitely in the long run.
  2. Lack of an Indian all-rounder who can be an automatic inclusion int he team poses a threat on the overall balance of the team.
  3. Inability to find a place for Mujeeb ur Rahman from the beginning itself has the potential to weaken the bowling lineup. Getting him in late into the season has seldom worked out for them.
player from another team
Shivam Mavi / Varun Chakaravarthy —> It is highly unlikely that both these players get to feature together in the KKR playing XI. This means that either of these players (or both of them) would be warming the benches. However, at KXIP, either of them would be an automatic inclusion and would provide a much needed stability to the lower middle order while also given an additional bowling option.
key player
Glenn Maxwell —> No surprises here. Not only will Glenn Maxwell have pinch-hitting duties, he would be also be the shepherd of all KXIP finishes (chasing as well as setting). His bowling on slow & deteriorating pitches will also come to be more than handy.
prediction
The verdict for KXIP is a bit tricky. They seem to tick all the boxes and the team looks competitive on paper. Yet, the problem which they always have still persists – their inability to integrate and put together a championship-winning team. Maybe this year they will be able to do that, maybe they will not. I would still say that KXIP will not make it to the playoffs and would finish 5th of 6th but I wouldn’t be very surprised if they do make it to the final four.
